  • The X-Bow is a single-target, rapid-firing defense that is unlocked at Town Hall level 9.
  • The X-Bow has to be loaded to work. Loading is free and takes place automatically after you log into the game, but if it fires enough shots without being reloaded it will eventually run out of ammunition and will not fire. The X-Bow holds 1,500 rounds of bolts from its box and fires 8 times per second, and takes 3 minutes and 12 seconds for one X-Bow to unload all of its ammunition.
  • The X-Bow holds 1,500 rounds of bolts from its box and fires 8 times per second, and takes 3 minutes and 12 seconds for one X-Bow to unload all of its ammunition.
  • It can be configured to two modes: Ground Mode, which can only target ground troops at a range of 14 tiles. Air & Ground Mode, which can target both ground and air troops at a reduced range of 11.5 tiles.
  • Ground Mode, which can only target ground troops at a range of 14 tiles.
  • Air & Ground Mode, which can target both ground and air troops at a reduced range of 11.5 tiles.
  • A well-placed and loaded X-Bow will dominate attacks, but to be most effective it should not be used as a front-line defense. With the second longest range of any damage-dealing defense, it is best placed behind all other defenses, typically in the center of a base.
  • Be sure to keep your X-Bow loaded by logging into the game from time to time. An unloaded X-Bow is not only a waste of space, it is a good indicator that your base may be neglected, encouraging others to raid you.
  • Although the X-Bow shoots rapidly, each shot causes only a relatively small amount of damage, but has a high damage per second. Support it with powerful defenses (such as Mortars , Wizard Towers , Air Defenses, Bomb Towers , or Scattershots) so it can quickly take out your enemies.
  • The dominance of Balloon and Minion oriented attacks at and around Town Hall 9 in Clan Wars and regular raids make a strong case for keeping X-Bows set to Air and Ground in both farming and war bases. At higher levels, it is still useful to set it to Air and Ground if extra aerial defense is needed against air attacks like Lavaloon, Electro Dragons , or Bat -based attacks, or if Air Defenses are being upgraded and unavailable.

  • The X-Bow has essentially no weaknesses (but is quite weak to swarms) unless it is set to ground-only mode, determinable by the way it is angled. If it is horizontal to the ground, it can target ground troops only within a long range. If it is tilted up, then it can attack air units as well, but at a reduced range.
  • The X-Bow can lock on to a unit for a very long time because of its long range. This means that placing the X-Bow near the center can allow it to snipe at troops on the outer areas of your base. It also counteracts the effect of the Healer when set to Air & Ground mode. The X-Bow also counters the Queen Walk, a popular strategy consisting of the Archer Queen and Healers, with the help of other buildings.
  • In order to attack an X-Bow, treat it like a longer-ranged Cannon or Archer Tower , but do not forget that many units can be mowed down very quickly by this defense. Distract it with high-health troops like Giants , Golems , Ice Golems , or P.E.K.K.As , and destroy it with a large group of attackers such as Archers , Minions , or Barbarians . Attacking players can see if the defender's X-Bow is loaded or not. Currently, there is no way to tell exactly how much Elixir the X-Bow has left, but a player can visually tell when it is empty. When it is loaded, you will see a small box containing what appears to be small Elixir bolts (wooden bolts at level 11). An unloaded X-Bow will be lacking the box, and the bowstring will be missing (see the image gallery below). Attacking players can also see if the X-Bow is set to ground-only or both ground and air, and also via the Tactical Overview. Take advantage of ground-only X-Bows and send in air units to destroy it first. An X-Bow that is empty is completely useless and will not fire. It still must be destroyed to achieve 100% destruction, and troops that preferentially attack defenses (e.g. Giants, Golems, Hog Riders , Ice Golems, and Balloons ) will still target an unloaded X-Bow if it is closer to them than an active defense .

  • X-Bows undergo significant visual changes at all levels except level 8. When initially constructed, the X-Bow consists of a huge crossbow with wooden limbs, hemp string, a black metal arrow track, and a wooden ammunition cartridge at the back with black metal corners and metal circles riveted on the back corners, containing elixir bolts. The X-Bow is held up by a black metal pillar by the "muzzle" with black metal plates and rivets, with two metal gears on its base, mounted on a base made of light-colored wood with a white stone axle surround by a black metal ring and a black, gear-shaped rim being riveted on it. It has small obsidian crystal on the corners of the stone foundation. When set to Air & Ground Mode, the X-Bow bends at "muzzle" and the pillar, causing the back to lean downward and allow it to aim at air troops. At level 2, the X-Bow base is replaced with normal wood, the metal ring is made with gray metal, and the gear is gilded. The stone foundation uses gray metal and gold spike replaces the obsidian crystal on the corners. At level 3, the X-Bow base is replaced with wood dyed black, the axle is now gilded, the gear is black once again and its rivets are now gold and have a spike. The stone foundation is also made of obsidian and bigger, and multiple sharper obsidian spikes replaces the gold spike on the corners. At level 4, the X-Bow base becomes a red wheel, the gray metal ring is replaced with gray stone, the axle top is now a spike instead of flat, and a golden octagonal rim with gold plating on each angle replaces the gear. The stone foundation is now made of rough gray rocks, the tip of the spikes glow a dull red that fades as it reaches the base, as if it is red hot. At level 5, the barrel now comes with a riser (around the "muzzle" of a crossbow securing the bow's limbs) with small golden spike flanking both sides replacing the plates and the rivets, the tip of the barrel is golden, the plate and rivets between the X-Bow and the pillar are removed and replaced with a bolt, the ammunition cartridge and the rivet for the on the metal circles turn from wooden to gold. The X-Bow base wheel turns gray, the golden rim becomes bigger that its gold plating on the sides now goes into the ground, its inner surface turns red. The foundation matches the shape of the golden rim and is made of a red metal with a short black metal band around it, the spikes at the corners are square pyramidal instead of being more organic and wider at the base, have their tips cut off, and the glow comes from the base instead of the tip. At level 6, the limbs are now made out of metal, the ends of the bow are covered with metal, the front of the riser is covered with gold, and the spikes are replaced with a steel stirrup. The X-Bow base wheel is pink and the red inner surface is removed, the gray stone ring is gilded. The foundation is fully made of reflective black metal, the spikes are replaced with metallic corner piece flush with the top layer of the foundation, the bottom is a much less reflective black metal with a pentagonal bolt on the front. At level 7, the ends of the bow are thinner but covered with a brass band, the riser is now made of a deep green metal, the front of the riser is larger, the stirrup and the rivet are now a deep green metal spike. The X-Bow base wheel is replaced with deep turquoise wood flush to the rim, the gilded ring is made of purple metal, and the gold plating on top of the corner pieces is slightly taller and slanted. The top part of the foundation is made of a deep purple metal and the bottom is deep green metal, the corner pieces are now slightly bigger, with icy blue metal tops, dark gray metal base, and two deep green metal spikes on the base for each piece. At level 8, the X-Bow base's gold plating that go into the ground now gains a second step. Each corner piece and its spikes are slightly bigger again, and at the sides are a small purple plate that itself has an even smaller deep green plate on it, which both connects to the top and bottom of the foundation. At level 9, the ends of the bow is now covered with a wider green metal band, the riser is now made of a green metal, and the metal spike is a much lighter green. The X-Bow base wheel turns to green, the purple metal ring is made of purplish gray stone and the axle turns black, the second step of the gold plating becomes a golden bolt. The whole foundation is made of purplish gray stone, the corner pieces are bigger yet again and replaced with black stone, the top gold platings are gone and replaced with a shrank metal top which is gold and connects to the rim with a smaller green metal plate on it, the deep green metal spikes are replaced with two golden linings, the side purple plate is removed and the green plate is now purplish gray connecting to the foundation. At level 10, the ends of the bow is a bit wider and covered with a thinker silver band, the riser is now made of a purple metal, and the spike at the tip is replaced with a hollow silver upside-down triangle (the symbol of Town Hall 15). The X-Bow base wheel turns to purple flush to the rim, the stone ring is replaced with purple metal and the axle turns golden once again, the second step of the gold plating replaces the golden bolt again. The top of the foundation is made with black stone and bottom with red metal, the corner pieces slightly shrink, the metal top is now purple and cover most of the corner piece and no longer covered by the golden rim, the golden linings are removed, and the side middle-sized plate is added back using silver and the small plate is bigger made red of red metal connecting to the bottom of the foundation. At level 11, the limbs are made with white stone instead of metal, the ends of the bow is covered with a red wood ring instead of silver band, the hemp string is replaced with whiter elastic string. The arrow track is wider and made with greenish gray metal, so are the corners of the ammunition cartridge and the circles at the back, which are connected by a metal cylinder, the cartridge is made of red wood and contain wooden bolts. The riser is made of red wood, and the front has a bolt on each side and the upside-down triangular symbol is replaced by a leaf (symbol of Town Hall 16). The black gears around the pillar is smaller and darker, the X-Bow base wheel becomes brown, the metal is made of greenish gray metal and the axle is flat again but protrudes more upwards and is made of brass. The rim is also made of brass, shrinks in width, and rotates where the sides meets the corner pieces instead of the angle, and the plating and golden steps are removed. The top of the foundation is made with red wood, the middle with white stone, and bottom with gray metal, with the corner pieces also layered the same way, each corner piece is a hexagon with a brass spike on top surrounded by curling roots, and two brass supports over the middle and bottom layer of the corner piece on the sides. At level 12, the appearance changes significantly. The limbs of the crossbow are now slightly darker and are doubled, with the ends being merged into one. The color of the cartridge changes into blue, with its metal parts turning into gold, and the wooden bolts turn purple. The arrow track is now lighter in color, and the elastic string reverts back into hemp rope, but colored red, and is doubled. The riser changes to the color of the arrow track, and at the front, the leaf symbol is replaced by a stone eagle head with a gold beak and a crown. The base and foundation almost entirely turns into a dark grey stone, with the exception of the center top of the base turning gold. The octagonal rim of the base now shifts by an angle, but not the foundation itself. The sides now gain thick, dark metal plating while the corners of the foundation are now replaced with blue eagle wings.
